Location
The albergo diffuso Omu Axiu is located in Orroli, the village of the ultra centenarians in the region of Sarcidano at about 75 Km from the airport of Cagliari. The hotel is easily reachable through the SS 131 following the directions to Barumini, Nurri and then Orroli. In the surroundings it is possible to visit various archaeological sites and areas of naturalistic interest such as Parco Su Motti and the lakes of Mulargia and Flumendosa. The village itself offers several local crafts: the wood and stone manufacture, the weaving of tapestry and carpets made with old wooden looms.
Hotel
The hotel Omu Axiu was once an authentic Sardinian house dating back to more than 5 centuries ago belonging to the Vargiu family (in fact the name in the local dialect means "house Vargiu") and consists of 2 buildings adjacent to each other. The owners have decided to make a house-museum to make live again the atmosphere of the past (you can watch the manufacture of bread and pasta), using a part of it as an ethnographic and embroidery museum and the other part duly restored dedicated to hospitality with modern and spacious rooms. Thanks to this enterprise it is possible to see the work tools that were used in the fields perfectly preserved, embroidered outfits of 19th century and it is possible to taste the wholesome home-made dishes of the past. Another part of Omu Axiu is used to display and sell the best products of artistic Sardinian handicraft (pottery, fabrics woven with handlooms, jewellery, knives, etc ...) and agriculture and food (meats, wines, olive oil , cheese, etc..).
Rooms
Hotel Omu Axiu disposes of nine double rooms and two mini-suites. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and bright, all refurbished and essentially furnished with local Sardinian handicraft and fabrics. One of them features a nice fireplace. All rooms have access from the internal court of the hotel and are equipped with heating and air conditioning/fan and TV. The mini-suites have a large entry, a living room with a sofa, a bedroom and a bathroom.
Restaurant
The saloon where once the farmers used to grind the cereals is now a large restaurant of the albergo diffuso Omu Axiu. There is also a spacious area outside on the porch (sa lolla), which looks out onto the large courtyard, enclosed by the house itself. At lunch and dinner visitors are served a selection of typical Sardinian products: hors d’oeuvres of mature cheeses and cold meats, as well as a variety of breads, hard wheat pasta and then a main course of local meat and game cooked on a spit or stewed. The meal is completed with traditional cakes and biscuits made from ricotta, sheep’s cheese and almonds. The tasty courses are accompanied by full-bodied red wines and home-produced “passiti” (wine made from dried grapes). To better “feel” the atmosphere of ancient times, the meals are served by waitresses in traditional costumes from the nineteenth century.
Activities
During your stay at Omu Axiu you will have the possibility to take cooking classes (groups of min. 8 people), visit the main archaeological sites in the vicinity, make mountain-bike excursions, trekking, go fishing in the lakes, canoe and boat excursions.
